Exclusive Interview With Jason Izatt, iPhone App Developer
Check out this exclusive interview with Jason Izatt, iPhone App Developer of MatchTunes, find out why it hits all the right notes…….
The Beginning

Hey Jason, can you tell our readers how your app was orginally thought of, what were your thoughts behind the marketplace, specifically?
Sure Joanne, I first came up with MatchTunes last Spring when the ability to tap into the iPod was announced with OS 3.0. I knew that people love their music, and a game to interact with their music would be a lot of fun.
Design

Can you tell us how you came up with the colors and themes ideas, design?
I have a great designer I use for my clients’ apps, and I went to him for MatchTunes. The credit goes to him Joanne.
Target Market

Who do you see as the main target market for this app, Jason?
Anyone who loves their music and enjoys proving how well they know it, either to themselves or to a friend (via 2-player game).
Production

How long did it take from the original planning to the production process of your app?
We shipped over 35 apps in 2009, so I didn’t always have the time to work on MatchTunes. Idea was in May, proof of concept in August, then serious work and design in November and December. I really wanted to hit the Christmas market, so it was a pretty solid 2 weeks, early mornings and late nights, in early December to finish things off before submitting, Joanne.
Sales

How do you view your sales, is there a good solid market for this style of app?
I use the application AppViz for the Mac. Nice program and they keep up with the changes in iTunesConnect. We’re still learning how to best market the app without breaking the bank, but we believe it’s going to be well received.
Obstacles

What has been the hardest obstacle you have had to overcome regarding this app development?
I wanted iPod access to be as efficient as possible, and even after shipping, I’ve thought of ways to improve it. So I’ll be adding those in an update.
Third Parties

Would you consider developing apps for third parties?
Absolutely! We’ve already developed over 35 apps for our clients.
App Store

What have you learned from the App Store since you launched your app?
One thing is that the days of just putting out an app and making money are over. You have to budget for marketing and advertising. But a lot can be done for free via social media, and you have to do it.
Apple

Have Apple supported you well with your app?
Apple does a fantastic job with iTunes and all the tools they provide. Some whine about the 30% cut, but where else can you get one of the world’s largest distribution channels for only $100 upfront and a 30% cut?
Our flagship app, MileBug, is currently listed in the What’s Hot section of 57 of the 77 App Stores. That has resulted in a tripling of sales.
The Future

What next, are you developing another app? Would you go for the same genre again, if not which?
I do have an idea for another game app that taps into the iPod. That one should be a lot fun, too.
iPad

The Apple iPad – what are your thoughts about it?
I’m excited about it! I just hope I can afford it. Plus, if it’s geared up to run all the iPhone apps, that will be really exciting.
Thank you Jason for this really insightful interview, I am sure many readers will find this interesting. Best wishes Joanne
