When traveling abroad, do you ever wish you could quickly translate some of the items on the menu in that French, German, Spanish or Italian restaurant (delete as appropriate)? Or have you heard someone mention a particular fish or cheese but hadn’t heard of the name before? Well, the Food Guide app may be just what you’re looking for.

It has around 1,500 separate food entries split over 18 chapters, and runs offline, handy if you’re out of network coverage or away from a WiFi hotspot. Naturally, each chapter’s heading is of relevant food types: Herbs and Seasonings, Seafood, Vegetables and so on, but a search option for the name in any one of the previously mentioned languages (as well as English) makes the Food Guide a very powerful tool.

Of the 1,500 or so food types, the guide provides a brief description along with the country of source (though not if it’s widespread) and how it’s usually prepared, so you’re unlikely to get a unpleasant surprise if you do order from the menu. There are high-quality photos for each too, usually in its raw, uncooked form, but no less useful for that. A neat and practical way of suggesting how special or, perhaps, how pricey the item is likely to be, is a rating (up to 5 stars) describing ‘culinary significance’. However, one of the features I used most often was the derivative options listed under ‘See also’; this is a great way of finding alternative choices in the supermarket, hotel, youth hostel or restaurant (delete as appropriate to lifestyle).

New to version 1.1 is the option to add individual items to a favorites folder, perhaps as a way of making a shopping list or simply as a note of the main ingredients for a special meal. Either way, it’s a most useful addition. I’m sure there must be a hundred other uses, too. As a foody (and food photographer), I really enjoyed using this app, though I may not be a typical consumer. However, for the perennial or even the occasional European traveller (there are some references to American foods) the Food Guide is a real must have.

There are plenty of apps offering ringtones but few, if any, have the versatility, or fun for that matter, of AutoRingtone PRO. For under a buck, the app creates ringtones from a selection of FX and converts text-to-speech for customized messages. A word of warning though; there’s no censorship, so anything goes. But do be careful, if your phone rings in an important meeting there could be red-faces all round. Assuming you’re sensible (…er, like us), Autoringtone PRO has some 20 plus voices and over 100 FX, so you there’s plenty of choice without the wacky options. What’s more, it’s a cinch to set-up. So easy in fact, there’s a real possibility of you having 100’s or 1000’s of customized ringtones.

Rather than using email to deliver the ringtones (and prevent being labelled a spammer), the developer has, sensibly, opted for user registration. It’s no biggie.You first have to register an email address and then retrieve your ringtones from the NoTie Software (actually www.autoringtone.com) website. You’re asked to use one of your email addresses, but there’s a possibility someone could see and ‘hijack’ your ringtones. Still, they would have to be pretty sad to want to do that. All the same, you can use any ‘identifier’, unique name, as the server uses this for ID purposes only. Ringtones are automatically deleted after a week, or you can delete them after you’ve downloaded them.

Once downloaded, simply open the files in iTunes, sync them with your phone and then choose the ringtone for your contact.

Another neat feature is the Manual mode, leveraging the iPhone’s ability to adopt ringtones for the Alarm settings. This means you can use the alert for reminding you, for instance, to collect the children from school, take medicine or whatever else. All you need do is type in the chore and select it from your Alarm settings (of course). It’s an extremely handy bonus feature.

With no real gripes or shortcomings, AutoRingtone PRO does exactly as advertised and in our opinion is well worth every cent of the close to a buck asking price.

Hi Navdeep, can you tell our readers how your app was originally thought of, what were your thoughts behind the marketplace, specifically?

Well Joanne, I was sitting across the room from my computer and I wanted to listen to a song that I hadn’t downloaded and didn’t know where to find. It occurred to me that there was really no way to do it. I quickly realized that a remote control for YouTube could do exactly what I wanted and much more.

Can you tell us how you came up with the colors and themes ideas, design, Navdeep?

I wanted something clean and minimalist — like Apple’s own interface design. instaplaylist is very flexible but hides as much complexity from the user as possible. In other words, instaplaylist “just works”. The user isn’t expected to understand how everything fits together.

Who do you see as the main target market for this app?

Anyone who listens to music or visits YouTube on a regular basis. I find myself using instaplaylist even when I’m right in front of the computer. For me, it has become an “input method” for YouTube, rather than just a remote control. Creating a playlist of YouTube videos using instaplaylist is actually easier and faster than visiting YouTube.com directly, Joanne.

How long did it take from the original planning to the production process of your app?

About six months. I decided to develop another iPhone app first — an app that was ultimately rejected by Apple. Much of that code found its way into instaplaylist instead. instaplaylist seems “small and simple” to the user but is actually rather complex. There’s a sort of clever “sleight of hand” taking place.

Since instaplaylist acts as a remote control, you would expect it to be the “client” and the computer to be the “server”. The opposite is actually true.

How do you view your sales, is there a good solid market for this style of app?

At this point, I would have to say that sales have been disappointing. I’m hopeful that things will improve as instaplaylist gains more attention. I still believe there’s a lot of potential there, Joanne.

What has been the hardest obstacle you have had to overcome regarding this app development?

This one is easy. The biggest obstacle by far has been getting any kind of attention for instaplaylist. With over 100,000 apps on the App Store, standing out has become increasingly difficult.

Even with glowing reviews from users & websites alike, it’s fair to say that nobody knows about instaplaylist.

Would you consider developing apps for third parties?

I’m open to promising opportunities.

What have you learnt from the App Store since you launched your app?

Just because you build it, doesn’t mean they’ll necessarily come. When I submitted instaplaylist, I believed it was a true innovation. I felt like simply getting it into the App Store would guarantee at least modest success. That certainly hasn’t turned out to be the case.

Have Apple supported you well with your app?

They approved it. That’s really all there is to say about that. instaplaylist hasn’t been chosen as “noteworthy” or featured in any other way.

What next, are you developing another app? Would you go for the same genre again, if not which?

My interest in iPhone development has cooled a great deal. Unless things change with instaplaylist or another truly great idea comes along, I’ll be sticking to Mac development for the foreseeable future.

The Apple iPad – what are your thoughts about it and how do you think your app will integrate?

The instaplaylist concept itself doesn’t really translate to the iPad but I always have my eyes open for interesting ideas.

Titanifacts is an unusual and unique app, depicting the history leading up to and surrounding the building of one of the most ill-fated ships of all time, RMS Titanic. If you didn’t know already, Titanic was built a century ago in Belfast, North East Ireland, now known as Northern Ireland.

Titanic was built by one of the world’s leading and innovative ship builders, Harland and Wolff , indeed their bright yellow cranes still dominate the site today, where they still build maritime vessels. Not only did they build the Titanic and sister ships, RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic, if you’ve been to London in the last decade or more and visited Tower Bridge, you will have no doubt seen HMS Belfast, a former Royal Navy light cruiser moored there, and now a floating exhibit open to the public. Harland & Wolff also built SS Canberra, requestioned by the UK Government as a hospital ship during the Falklands conflict in 1982.

Titanifacts centers around the building of the Titanic at the dockyard in Belfast, known as Titanic Dock locally or Queen’s Island more formally. Although the app consists of several movies optimized for both cellular and WiFi networks, there’ also a blog, news and links with other sites, a number of fascinating maps and a gallery of photos. The picture above for instance, shows the vast hulk of the Titanic, but also if you look closely her sister ship, Olympic, sits alongside (having said that, I’m not sure which one is which). In the movie’s commentary, it explains Harland & Wolff were one of the first major manufacturers to adopt documentary photography in the construction of their vessels, providing a unique insight into the sheer scale of the project. The gallery consists of over 20 photos and drawings.

Queen’s Island as it is today, courtesy of Google maps, note the 1920’s Royal Navy cruiser (HMS Caroline) in the berth next to the dock where the Olympic class liners, including the RMS Titanic, were fitted out (the hull or keel was laid out just out of shot, bottom left, but the slipway can still be seen). With a few feet to spare, Titanic only just fitted.

I decided to include another image from Google maps, zoomed out slightly, showing the slip-way where both the Olympic and Titanic were ‘laid out’, that’s to say where Harland & Wolff built the hulls. You can just see the two slip-ways (looking like runways) opposite the new ferry terminal, bottom left. Bottom right you can see the huge, bright yellow cranes of H&W in use today. Part of the site is being redeveloped, lets hope there are no plans to build over the slipways and the graving dock.

As well as the small but select gallery of photos the highlight of the app must be the series of movies. Four chapters detailing the history of the Titanic, up to the time she sailed, form the core content. Each chapter can be viewed either over the cellular network or using WiFi, the latter is much higher quality, but even the more compressed files are quite watchable. While the additional content is interesting, it’s more likely to appeal to ardent Titanic enthusiasts. There’s little here of the tragedy that was to unfold on her maiden voyage, but one particular fact struck me; even though there were too few lifeboats, the Titanic wasn’t sailing at full capacity. She was designed to carry 3,500 passengers. In the event, with around 2,200 passengers and crew, Titanic wasn’t traveling as fast as some rivals when she struck the iceberg. Even so, well over 1500 people lost their lives on that fateful evening.

In conclusion, Titanifacts provides a fascinating ‘behind the scenes’ look at one of the most infamous events in maritime history. Not only is it compelling viewing for all those interested in the Titanic saga, but it’s unique delivery makes it an ideal learning aid for children; let’s hope this is the first of many more to come.

As you may of thought this is a music matching game, you don’t have to use the preset music though you can use the sounds from your own iTunes library. The aim of the game is to match the music clips out of a number of random icons on the screen. It is an audial memory game basically.

You can play as one player or two. As soon as you see the note icons, you select one and will hear a music clip playing, click on another icon to see if the sound matches. If it does, they will both go green and you will gain points. If not, they will both stay in-situ relying on your memory to select one when you hear the music clip again.

In the above screen shot you can see that it is Player 2’s turn and you can see the scores for both Player 1 and Player 2 displayed.

You can fine tune – pardon the pun – settings of this app, you can extend the length of the clip, song, album or artist that plays and you can also select the genre of music you wish to listen too. For example, whether you have dance, electronic, hip hop or rap music to choose from in your iTunes library.

This is a great app, it has a gorgeous design and is very creative. It allows the user or users to have a great game as well as further utilizing their iTunes music selection.
